I just want to note the awesome work of the artist here. I noted at least three different inspiration sources put together as one robot, and the result is pretty drat impressive to say the least. Look at it very closely, you will see the details and how they make the robot, well, I don’t think realistic is the best word, but it certainly fit.
On a different note, keep going for the crazy and totally illogical to surprise us. I love that. Sure it makes absolutely no sense to have a robot in that context, but I really like when things go overboard and people just say “Ok, it’s Japan, so they have giant robots” “In MEDIEVAL Japan?!” “In ALL Japan!”
Also, I have to say: BELIEVE IN YOUR OWN JUSTICE!
(Thoses among you who get this quote, and why in this context it’s even more hilarious, win a gold star :3 )
Ooooo, good!
First rule of war — know your enemy.
Bunny has been working under a handicap all along, thinking Wolfie was a normal… well, sort of a normal… well, that he was at least HUMAN.
Second rule of war — no cheating. (okay, I just made that one up)
The corollary to this rule is, if the other guy cheats, you don’t have to play nice.
@Stranger: I have to agree. I’ve as strong a suspension of disbelief as the next guy, but it is possible to push things too far. We go from a medieval setting with no indication of anything high-tech to throwing in an opponent who’s tech is 500-1000 years beyond the scope of the setting. Now if it had been some sort of golem, that I would have frowned a bit at since there’s also been no indication of such magics but still been able to accept.
As it is, I have to admit that the comic is on probation for me. I’ll give it a few more weeks to give a reasonable explanation behind things but if there isn’t, it’s likely I’ll stop reading. Not trying to be a drama queen or the like, I just prefer a certain level of continuity in what I read. Surprises are great, but they still have to make sense in the overall scheme of things.
Call it! Back at the Meat-Bag Statement!
… Alright, so at the time I was joking, but my comment had to be deleted because it was too close to the truth.
I suppose in retrospect, he was either going to be a robot, or a girl.
…In more retrospect, I’m disappointed it wasn’t the girl route, because TV Trope tells me nice things happen after the reveal…
I understand if others jump ship at this point; maybe a little too deus ex machina; but I’m staying for Bunny’s wit and style. And did I mention she’s a hottie?
I knew it. As for breaking suspension of disbelief for the setting…
Bunny herself is actually out of place in this setting if you consider the way she talks and dresses, further plot points towards this when you add in the fact that she knows what a robot even is. This might actually become a major plot point, if it isn’t already… I would say that this twist will eventually tie back into Bunnies origins and set the mood for our bunny ninja girl’s mysterious past to fuel future story arcs..
Why is it that I strongly suspect that there is another assassin out there known as the Hare, and that Blade Bunny is having an epic case of mistaken identity. Fortunately the Bunny Hunny is good at what she does, even if a very silly person.
But despite not wearing underwear, we stilly haven’t seen Bunny’s, uh, C-word.
I don’t know why the robot, out of all other things, would challenge your suspension of disbelief, guys.
BB doesn’t fit the “timeline” either. Neither do glass windows, for that matter, and yet, she’s broken through quite a few.
While there was a “template” for a particular time period, there are lots of inconsistencies. Nobody told you guys it was feudal Japan. We know now that this is definitely not the feudal era (ok, it probably is still a feudal era, but not the one we know), but who’s to say this is even in Asia, or Earth, even? The setting hasn’t been exposed yet. For all you know, this is a Space Colony or something.
If you noticed, BB didn’t freak out. Robots are commonplace, or at least known in that setting.
Honestly, I fear for today’s comic readers if they can accept other inconsistencies, yet go “WTF?” at intentional plot lines and devices.
Perhaps, but a robot (and a fairly complex one, at that) is still a considerably more advanced technology than glass windows. So far, the entire comic has remained fairly consistent, with a setting very reminiscent of Feudal-era Japan. The way she acts and dresses, although bizarre, is not so off-putting since we have come to expect such things from anime/manga-style works. (Really, scantily-clad women are to be expected in ANY medium, even things supposedly aimed at kids)
See, stranger, that’s not what I mean. The comic has been fairly consistent INCLUDING the robot, not aside from it. The fact that there are inconsistencies between the comic and F.Japan means that they are not in a setting that is the same as FJ.
BB is not time-congruent. Glass windows are not time congruent. Robots are not time-congruent, and neither are some of the bizarre styles of clothing other characters have worn. Hell, BB herself isn’t time congruent in a varied number of ways. While this is manga-style, scantily-clad women are not accurate. Neither is her language, her attitude or her lack of “common” knowledge. Without the Setting fully exposed, anything goes.
Exactly Vyce, so far we have seen two palaces, one with a glass skylight for her to fall though, one where she got her first job of the series… Oh yeah, the robot was probably waiting for her at the second palace and didn’t notice her until she was trying to escape…. Aside from that I am inclined to believe that the robot was hinted at already… I mean really what human says “Out of the way meat-bag!” while tossing a guy into a rock hard enough to possibly kill him…
Possible explanations for the robot that would make perfect sense.
Robot is from the future like in the terminator movies…
Robot is from another planet.
They are on another planet and what we have seen here so far are the local yokels. (After all who says space colonists could maintain the high level of tech required to land them on another planet? Firefly anyone?)
Setting is earth in the future, human society has collapsed for the most part and has managed to rebuild itself back to feudal era level of tech, with a few surviving and sentient robots roaming around. and likely other remnants of high tech stuff nobody remembers how to build or maintain laying around…)
Parallel universe with some things hoping in from other realities…
Straight up Schizo tech with little to no explanation.. or a gentle hand wave…
actually i was not surprised at all at the appearance of a robot there have been many Japaneses Anime and Mangas that mix the Feudal Japan era style look with futuristic robots. also the comic’s world setting might be something the writer created nothing states he has to make his setting historically accurate. my advice is just enjoy the comic and if you don’t then don’t read it, its that simple.
vyce, eric–the thing about not knowing how to use a chopstick, or not even knowing what it was, may have been sandbagging–acting the ditzy blonde so as to catch the mark by surprise.
I think bunny is way too smart, it takes stupidity to be obnoxious, but it takes total genius to be THAT obnoxious XD .
Also at first glance I thought the robot was a dragon, then I saw it was some terminatortype with the mask of that big mech with the dancing weirdo’s in latex, of which one is pink, can’t remember their name … also I think a cameo by Mr. Pink from the Reservoir dogs is called for later in the series …
Also it is NOT a robot, cause robots have to obey the Three Laws and thus could not harm Mr. Meatbag, unless this is a ploy where the robot has circumvented the First Law by depersonificating Meatbag, this could explain why he insists Bunny is not a name but a denomination of a type of rodent …
@Bay: You have obviously never heard of the god of killing machines HK-47. He appears in Star Wars KOTOR, and near the end of KOTOR 2. HK-47 even refers to his owner as a meatbag repeatedly, and takes “pleassure” in the work of killing things. Then again, HK-47 was an assassin/protocol droid so he could be programmed to prefer using force when it gets the same desired result. Also, isn’t Wolf being used as an assassin? Taking money for killing targets? In this case Bunny?
And there this stuff got shredded in my mind. I loved the artwork but dialogue’s is just worthless. And now there is a robot… Mashing as many genres and idea’s into one manga as possible is not a recipe for success…
I’m actually feeling “Jumped Shark” sorta moment. If one of the bad guys had pulled something like a laser pistol earlier in the plot, that would have established future technology in a fedal Japan setting. This robot comes completely out of left field.
holy crap-tastic-fapping-ass-ballz! THAT is a plot twist!
also can we have an awesome drawing of him/her in this like bunny’s awesome drawing?
OK whoever it was that guessed he was a robot, give yourself a big clap on the back. You were spot on.
“HOW’S THAT FOR A TWIST!?”
Crap! He reminds me of Megatron…
I just want to note the awesome work of the artist here. I noted at least three different inspiration sources put together as one robot, and the result is pretty drat impressive to say the least. Whoally crap! Looks like the love child of a Terminator, and movie Megatron.
Where’s Tony Stark, when you need him?
Alright, now it’s my turn to say- OH COME ON.
WTF! That’s just cheating. Where’s an e.m.p. grenade or a telephone wire? Better yet. PHONE ZEUS!
That….
That is not a robot.
That is a Terminator. And this is insanely awesome right now. A bit “WTF?”, but considering all that’s happened, it makes some sort of sense.
@Stranger: I have to agree. I’ve as strong a suspension of disbelief as the next guy, but it is possible to push things too far. We go from a medieval setting with no indication of anything high-tech to throwing in an opponent who’s tech is 500-1000 years beyond the scope of the setting. Does she still want to make out with it?
Call it! Back at the Meat-Bag Statement!

I suppose in retrospect, he was either going to be a robot, or a girl.
…In more retrospect, I’m disappointed it wasn’t the girl route, because TV Trope tells me nice things happen after the reveal…
The call was too easy. Only robots and ghosts generally use the old “meat-bag” phrase.
I understand if others jump ship at this point; maybe a little too deus ex machina; but I’m staying for Bunny’s wit and style. And did I mention she’s a hottie?
I knew it. As for breaking suspension of disbelief for the setting…

Holy Crap, it’s like Donnie Darko’s Frank meets the Terminator… badass!
I see someone noticed the terminator influence, but that’s not ALL, look closer! Especially the head! ^^
Also, don’t be spoilsports guys, it doesn’t need to make sense! All aboard the crazy train!
Also, there STILL can be a girl INSIDE the robot! Don’t count it out!
Foul! Mechanoid player on the field!
I wouldn’t be surprised by aliens showing up at this point…. (or Wolf Fang turning out to be of extra terrestrial origin even)
… … … ok… … … a robot… … … … … just reminds me of gamers 2:
“[...] But whats with the Pirates?”
- “Everything is better with pirates!”
I don’t know why the robot, out of all other things, would challenge your suspension of disbelief, guys.

And not only that, BB’s never even heard of chopsticks. The guy she was sent to kill said that they used them “here”.
We don’t know if this is due to time-travel, alternate realities, SPACE-DERP, or just because BB may in fact be a total airhead.
O_____O
Vyce – I’m going to go with “total airhead”.
Blade Bunny! (she needs an exclamation point as part of her name) is really good at what she does, but she is not the sharpest stick on the table.
…Seriously?
I heard a saying, but can’t remember for the life of me who said it: “Coherence is the refuge of lack of imagination” ^^
I quite like it! We don’t need common sense! What did it ever do for us?!
@Vyce:

HOW BOUT IT QGIBA!? GOOD LOOKIN ENOUGH FOR YOU!? XD

I think I share everyone’s reaction to this.
BWAH!?

Blade bunny drinking game. Whenever Bunny says ‘That’s not fair’, take a drink.
ok for all those who dont know in some medevil settings there have been robots due to magic and other like forces
Because in Afro Samurai, all those robots made sense, but everyone didn’t care because Samuel L. Jackson was kicking peoples faces in.
It’s a STORY people. If he was trying for accuracy, this would be http://www.history.com.
Very Shiro for the robot.
vyce, eric–the thing about not knowing how to use a chopstick, or not even knowing what it was, may have been sandbagging–acting the ditzy blonde so as to catch the mark by surprise.
wow… Someone’s been watching far too much Afro Samurai… Wait… (See’s the contradiction between “too much” and “Afro Samurai”)
But still! Come on…
I think bunny is way too smart, it takes stupidity to be obnoxious, but it takes total genius to be THAT obnoxious XD .

The robot’s body makes me think of Bionicle…
Err… Wow… I, for one, admit i didn’t see THAT one coming!
And there this stuff got shredded in my mind. I loved the artwork but dialogue’s is just worthless. And now there is a robot… Mashing as many genres and idea’s into one manga as possible is not a recipe for success…
I saw a reference but I didn’t see this coming!
No wonder it didn’t want to make out.
I’m actually feeling “Jumped Shark” sorta moment. If one of the bad guys had pulled something like a laser pistol earlier in the plot, that would have established future technology in a fedal Japan setting. This robot comes completely out of left field.
